K.A.L.T.O - An Introduction.

The Kenya Association of Local Tour Operators (K.A.L.T.O.) was registered in 2006.It is an association that brings together the small and medium sized companies of Tour Operators registered in Kenya and licensed by Kenya's Ministry of Tourism.

In the past, the small, mainly indigenous tour companies lacked representation. This was because the then existing Associations of Tour Operators were more friendly to the larger companies and set conditions of membership just out of reach of particularly newly registered companies.

As a result small companies, that came to be known as independent operators, operated completely unchecked and unregulated.

This threatened the integrity of tour operations in Kenya generally. Tourists booking with these companies found themselves with no place to get redress on the rare occasions when things went wrong with their bookings.

A body to regulate these small operators was necessary if they were going to survive. It was in this background that Kenya Association of Local Tour Operators was born.

K.A.L.T.O.- Objectives.

The Kenya Association of Local Tour Operators acts as a regulatory body for small and medium sized companies of tour operators. K.A.L.T.O. sets the operations standards for these companies as well as provide them with a code of conduct. The companies are accountable and answerable to K.A.L.T.O. enabling third parties to not only authenticate them but easily find redress whenever necessary.

As a voice for these companies K.A.L.T.O. partners with other organisations and associations in policy making on matters that concern and affect tourism in Kenya. It also acts as an information portal for the member companies.

K.A.L.T.O. aims to promote local tourism which has lagged behind as the main stream companies have concentrated their marketing efforts to the international travellers leaving out the locals. Information on Kenyan tourist attractions has remained unavailable to the locals, as most information portals are designed and earmarked for the international traveller. K.A.L.T.O. has stepped in to bridge this gap.

K.A.L.T.O. ensures a level playing ground for all its members, by ensuring that standard rates are employed by all members in their costings and quotations.

The Association is not only involved in marketing Kenya as a tourists destination both locally and internationally, it Is also involved in the creation and the promotion of more circuits to take full advantage of Kenya's diversity.
